Current-season Simarouba glauca seed — depulped, dried and sold in dated lots, with the germination protocol included.

Why the date on the lot matters

Published guidance on how long Simarouba seed stays viable contradicts itself. TNAU reports that fresh seed germinates at 70–80% and stores 9–12 months at room temperature without losing viability. An international profile says the seed is best sown as soon as ripe and "has a viability of only a few months."

We are not going to pretend that is settled. What follows from it either way: sow as fresh as you can, and know the date of what you are sowing. Every lot we send carries its collection date. If someone sells you seed without one, you have no idea where in that range you are.

Fruit matures March into April, so the freshest seed follows that window.

Seed or saplings? Read this first

Seed is far cheaper than grafted saplings. There is a catch, and it is the whole story of this crop.

Seedlings are of unknown sex. Simarouba glauca is polygamodioecious — only female trees fruit, and a seedling will not reveal which it is until it flowers in year four to six. Raising a plantation from seed means accepting roughly a coin toss per tree, discovered five years in.

Seed makes sense if: you are raising rootstock to graft onto; you are planting for afforestation, soil cover or biomass where fruit is not the point; you are a nursery; or you are experimenting at small scale.

Grafted saplings make sense if: the fruit is the point — which for any commercial planting, it is. Grafted saplings → · Why sex matters →

Germination, in brief

Full protocol ships with the seed.

  1. Use fresh seed. Everything else is secondary to this.
  2. Depulp and clean thoroughly; leftover pulp invites fungal attack.
  3. Soak before sowing.
  4. Sow in well-drained medium in poly bags or beds — sand and soil with FYM.
  5. Keep moist, not wet. Waterlogging kills seedlings and the species hates it at every stage.
  6. Shade through establishment, then harden off gradually.
  7. Transplant once seedlings are sturdy enough to handle.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of Lakshmi Taru seed? We quote rather than publish, because seed rates move with the season and the lot. Ask and you'll have a current figure the same working day.

How long does Simarouba seed stay viable? Sources disagree — TNAU reports 9–12 months in room-temperature storage without loss, while another profile says only a few months. Either way, fresher is better, which is why we date every lot and sell current-season seed.

Will seedlings from seed bear fruit? Only the female ones, and you cannot tell which they are until year four to six. For fruit, plant grafted material.

When is seed available? Fruit matures March into April, so fresh seed follows that window. Ask about current stock.

Do you ship seed outside India? Ask us — export requires phytosanitary documentation and depends on the destination country's import rules.
